About the Contest

From 1986-2011, the Georgia Traffic Injury Prevention Institute conducted a statewide poster/public service announcement/essay contest on "Why You Should Wear Seatbelts and Use Child Safety Seats". Children in grades K through 12 in all public, private and home schools are encouraged to participate. The state level winners received a plaque and a monetary prize sponsored by Georgia Power.

The posters, PSAs and essays were first judged at the school level. The school level winners were submitted to GTIPI for county judging. First place county winners became the pool from which state winners are judged. Posters were judged on content, message, accuracy and artistic detail. The winning students at the state level received a plaque and a monetary prize. Artwork from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place State Winner posters were featured in the calendar. Printing of the calendar from 1986-2011 was funded by the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS).

The 2010 calendar cover is by Megan Fowler, Camden County High School, Grades 9-12. Megan was a State Winner in both 2008 AND 2009.

GTIPI hopes you enjoyed this calendar as much as we enjoyed working with Georgia's school children during its creation in the 2009 contest.

How to Be a Winner

Here are some important tips to help make your entry
turn the heads of our contest judges:

1. Read the Instructions
Can I use paper instead of posterboard? What size posterboard should I use? Can I glue or paste items onto my poster? Can a school or 4-H club submit more than one entry? How long can PSA's and Essays be? These questions, and more, are answered in the Contest Rules. Contests have been won, and lost, by the judges reviewing requirements in the Contest Rules.

2. Use the Correct Entry Form
Entries with the wrong form, or no form attached, are disqualified and will not be judged.

3. Print clearly
If your entry is judged a county or state winner, we may not be able to contact you if we are unable to read the information on your Entry Form. Unfortunately, these entries will be disqualified.

4. Submit Entries Before the Deadline

Entries received after the deadline are automatically disqualified.

5. Use Accurate Information
Judges are looking for entries that portray accurate occupant safety information. Remember, the contest is all about the correct use of safety belts, child safety seats and booster seats.

6. Check Spelling and Grammar
For poster and essay entries, GTIPI recommends making a rough draft before you start. Practice PSA's several times before recording the take you enter. Poster and Essay entries are often disqualified, or have points counted off in judging, for spelling and grammatical errors.

7. Keep a Copy of Your Entry!
Entries become the permanent property of the University of Georgia and will not be returned. Be sure to take a digital picture or make photocopy prior to submitting your entry.

GTIPI strongly recommends you make a copy of your entry before you submit it.
